Recover/You

Are you tired of your addiction ruling your life?

Lost all hope that you will ever be free of the addiction?

Feeling like you've lost YOU?

Want some practical tools to help you out of the cycle?

Bulimia and the associated multiple addictions is by far the hardest thing I have ever experienced

READY TO EXPERIENCE FREEDOM AND

Bulimia is a serious, potentially life threatening mental illness.

A person with bulimia has not made a “lifestyle choice”, they are actually very unwell and need help.

Bulimia is characterised by repeated episodes of binge eating followed by compensatory behaviours such as vomiting, taking laxatives or diuretics, fasting, or exercising excessively (called purging)..

In addition, people with bulimia place an excessive emphasis on body shape or weight in their self-evaluation. This can lead to the person’s sense of self-esteem and self worth being wholly defined by the way they look.

A person with Bulimia can become lost in a dangerous cycle of eating out of control and attempts to compensate which can lead to feelings of shame, guilt and disgust. These behaviours can become more compulsive and uncontrollable over time, and lead to an obsession with food, thoughts about eating (or not eating), weight loss, dieting and body image.

Addiction is a psychological and physical inability to stop consuming a chemical, drug, activity, or substance, even though it is causing psychological and physical harm.

According to the World Health Organisation, for anything to be defined as an addiction, it must contain three of the below seven criteria;

  • tolerance (how much of a hit do you now need?)
  • withdrawal (how easy is it to give up?)
  • limited control (can you control quantities?)
  • negative consequences (how is it impacting your life?)
  • neglected or postponed activities
  • significant time or energy spent
  • desire to cut down

Personally, bulimia and my multiple addictions was like living in a mental prison and I couldn’t escape

Nothing soothed it. No matter how much chocolate, lollies or sugar I consumed, there was no ongoing relief. The sugar gave me 10mins of relief maybe, but then the guilt, shame, humiliation, negative self talk would start again.

I would spend my days counting every calorie consumed and every calorie burned during my 4-6 hours of exercise (my way of purging the binge) so that I could ensure that there was never any weight gain.

Weight gain meant I was weak, flawed, imperfect and unlovable.

It was constant mindless chatter of my unworthiness. It never eased.

No amount of exercise was enough, no amount of sex with random strangers ever soothed it, no matter amount of shopping eased it. It was just additional fuel for the self loathing and shame..

I felt lost, alone, out of control, ashamed and frightened.

Recover/You Tools

There are Four Key tools that will be the focus of the program

Honesty

The depths and deception of our addictions, our mental health battles, often mean we live in a place of denial that we even have an addiction or mental illness.

We can carry so much shame and pain about it that we deny even to ourselves that there is a problem that needs healing.

This key supports you to reach dive in deep and become brutually honest about your addiction and behaviours and the impact they are having on your life, and the lives of your loved ones.

This first key will have you feeling raw but until you start being honest, you can never overcome your illness.

You want recovery?

Then it is time to be completely honest.

Abstinence

Take a breath, and ask yourself, are you truly ready to come face to face with true abstinence from your addiction or the drivers of your mental health issues?

Are you ready to experience even 24 hours of not consuming that food, not purging, not exercising, not looking at social media, not shopping or spending any money?

How does that feel in your body? Is your heart racing at the thought?

Where are you feeling it?

How uncomfortable is that feeling?  What lies underneath it?

Are you really ready to do whatever it takes to stop? Forever..

Forgiveness

Our addictions, the mental illness that comes about from our addictions, are there for a reason.

We may have experienced something traumatic in our lives and we haven’t healed from it.

It could have been unkind words spoken to us or about us, a severe illness, a divorce we witnessed in the family home when we were a child and we sought comfort from the intense emotions, a break-up of a romantic relationship, etc.

With this key, we work through understanding the drivers that created our addictions, process those events, and then learn to forgive ourselves for our illness and resulting impact on our lives, and the lives of our loved ones.

This key is powerful, but it is not an easy one.

Self-Care

It may sound simple and straight forward, but it is something that when in the grips of addiction we don’t prioritise.

Self-care is pivotal to healing from your illness.

There are so many components to self-care that will support your recovery on a mental, spiritual, emotional and physical level.

In this module we breakdown what is going to be pivotal in a self-care practice to support you with your recovery on an ongoing basis.

This key whilst it may not feel as important as the others, is core. It is one that you cannot ignore or skip or the work done in earlier key’s won’t hold.

This key is non-negotiable as it sets the foundations for you to continue your healing journey.
